Granite is a popular stone used in and around the home, such as kitchen worktops and flooring. Replacing wooden worktops sometime after the Second World War due to fears of hygiene and cleaning, it is now granite worktops have become one of the most commonly used for kitchen worktops. However it has many other uses than just in the home.

History of Granite

In the past the Egyptians used granite to build and reinforce support, such as columns, walls, floor veneer, and lintel. The Red Pyramid of Egypt was given its name because of the light crimson of the exposed granite surfaces. Hindu temples also seem to take the Egyptian’s use of granite with their own temples, to the point that they can be compared to the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Aberdeen in Scotland is known as the Granite City along with its many other nicknames, originally constructed from local granite for its abundance it was normally used to build the foundations for homes.

Rock climbers have come to see granite as a prize when rock climbing, its friction, steepness, crack stems, and soundness making it one of the popular rocks when rock climbing. It’s so popular artificial climbing walls try to recreate the feel and look of it.
